Artist Statement

This picture reflects upon the idea of trust, specifically, how trust can be broken. Broadly, trust is the confidence of someone in a person or group. This can take many forms, but typically it is built up over time though good actions. However, trust can also be shattered quickly, as shown in this picture, which showcases the effect of broken trust in a relationship.

The heart is made of salt crystals, representing bitterness but also notable for the fact that, once broken, crystals shatter into many pieces and are extremely difficult to put back together again, similar to trust. The red obviously represents the color of the heart, and of anger/emotion. The large crack shows a heart broken, and the scattershot pieces of salt represent parts of the heart falling away. Lastly, the black and grey crystals represent parts of the heart being lost, or dying.
