Artist Statement

This picture reflects on the idea of "Chaos". Specifically, it reflects on the idea of mental chaos, especially the effects of stress and anxiety. The idea of mental chaos fits with the word chaos as these emotions are often chaotic in nature. There is no rhyme or reason to how intense they are, nor when they strike. This lack of consistency is also exhibited in the effect they have on people, as no two people react to these emotions the same. The varying reactions of different people to stressful or frightening emotions is sporadic and occasionally nonsensical, further aligning them with the theme of chaos.

In the image, I first showed 3 envelopes, one each from peer pressure (stress), depression, and anxiety. These represent the various feelings these emotions convey, and how suddenly they can change your mood. They can turn a good mood sour as soon as they are opened. Some people however, choose not to open them and bottle up these emotions so the do not have to feel them. To that end, i showcased crumpled, used tissues among the letters, symbolizing the struggle of the person to keep these emotions in check and carry on with their normal life, and how exhausting/saddening it is. The spilled bottle of pills is then shown to suggest that when people are unable to cope on their own, they often turn to other means to keep themselves from breaking down. I increased the contrast and blur of the picture to give it a ghostly feeling, almost as if it is being remembered in a dream, to show how the events involving these chaotic emotions are often remembered vividly in the minds of those who experienced them.
